Cadet stuff…No. 5 ……August 2007
So you managed to survive Cadet week and Kippford Week! Well done! Although the weather could have been better everyone seems to have had a great time.

Cadet Week
With lots of wind at the start of the week and a gale at the end it was amazing so many of you managed to sail. It was good to see the tustle for first place in our new Handicap Fleet. The Almoness Cup was first prize and went to Bronagh and Ailsa. Many thanks to Lucinda and Alex Scott for this cup and also the new White Port Plate. We are delighted that it did not have to called the Theo and Greig Memorial Cup! There is already growing interest in this fleet for next year so hopefully we will see some more stiff competition.

Flora made off with an armful of silverware after her good week in Cheeky Monkey. James 'Blue Streak' Kelly still needs a lap and a half head start!

Sam and Ruby Tabor sorted out the Mirror fleet and inspite of the arguments Robert and Lucy managed to come in second!

Rory Payne was wishing, on the Friday, he had stayed home and taken the discard after the 4th capsize but he had the Radial Class in the bag by then. George Clark managed a good second inspite of things breaking almost every day

The training course was as eventful as ever with Elaine only nearly drowning once and several 'early baths' which didn't seem to put anyone off too much. Anna Griffen needed ear defenders in Miss Miffy because Emma and Lydia screamed so much! Pleasure or terror….who knows?!

The raft race provided several cut feet, a crab bite and a couple of splinters. Poor old Molly will have a scar to show us all next year after her fight with a tree and I still have mud in my ears. All in your average Cadet Week!! Next time bring a friend or two.

Videos

Apart from the video clips on this site (see above) you will also find some of the video clips on You Tube. If you put sailing and Kippford into the search box you will find them. http://uk.youtube.com/

Ideas for Next time?

While its fresh please let us know if you have ideas about what you might like to do next time. We are always looking for improvements to make. We will try to be more organised with help for launching next time. Anyway send me any thoughts n.kelly@dsl.pipex.com

What's Next?

Club Championship
The 1st and 2nd September is Club championship weekend. Hope to see you all there. If the weather is fair we will try to do a BBQ so bring your pocket money! Details have still to be negotiated with Jessie. Come and enter on the day. Remember if you are borrowing a club boat to put your donation in the honesty box. The more the merrier!

Topper Team Racing
We will do our Topper Team Racing on Saturday the 15th September. This will involve sorting yourselves into teams of 3. We are expecting some of the Annandale Mob so it should be fun. There may even be some adult teams if we can find any that can still manage under the boom of a Topper. It will run off the end of the pier and involve a league and knock out phase much like the schools regatta. Prize for the best team name amongst others!!

Cadet Dinner
We will be holding a Cadet Dinner the night before Topper Team Racing. All of you and visitors welcome. This will be a sit down meal in the Clubhouse so dig out your ball gowns and kilts. Tickets will be £3.00. Help with catering would be welcome so let me know if you are able to help. Invitations will appear soon.

Training 16th September
There will be a coaching session on Sunday which will focus on ticking the boxes for those needing Level 3 to be signed off and will involve some racing tips. Remember to bring your log books for signing!

Training 29th September
This will be the last training session for the year. We will again be focusing on racing. In the evening the club holds its Laying Up Supper but if the weather looks decent we will put some sausages on the BBQ again!!

Palnackie Handicap
The last race of the year will be the traditional pursuit to Palnackie on the 30th September. Always good fun until you get becalmed at the Palnackie bouy!

Cadet Hoodies and Rugbies
We are still taking orders for club hoodies and rugby shirts. The hoodies cost between £12.00 and £20.00 depending on size and the Rugby Shirts are £15.00 to £20.00. Let Neil know if you would like one.

Finally Thank you….helpers
Many thanks to all those who helped us out during both Cadet Week and Kippford Week!
Have a good new term…..hmmm!

The Dumfries and Galloway Schools Regatta took place at the Annandale sailing club on Friday 22nd June. SYC cadets participated in the Dalbeattie and Austin Friars teams. Both teams progressed to the knockout phase of the competition but were knocked out in the quarter finals. Conditions were difficult with very light winds and thunder storms. In spite of this they all had a good day and agreed it was better than double maths!

Cadet stuff…No. 4 ……2007

Lots to report since the last 'Stuff' so thought we'd get this out before you all have your holiday before Cadet week! No excuses you all have to be there!

Schools Regatta
Campbell Ailsa Lee and Katherine had a good day out to the Schools Regatta at Annandale. Not much wind and thundery showers didn't dampen spirits but then anything beats double maths! Well done to Lockerbie for a well deserved win.

Sorting Boats
The Mirror in the garage at the club could do with a bit of work. It needs the rest of the bottom scraped and sanded before its paint job. We would like to get it done so it can be used for Cadet Week. If you have some spare time let me know and we can let you in or give you the code for the lock (n.kelly@dsl.pipex.com)

SWSSA - Whithorn Rose Bowl
Well done to those who braved the rough weather and rain to go to Whithorn. Adam Firby managed to ride the waves to cross the line as the first cadet home so well done to him. Ailsa and Bronagh (vinegar and brown paper removed following slight bump on head) managed to get round the course well apart from one wee turtle and Caitlin and Emma even braved the elements on the Sunday.

Reminder about cancelled July the 14th Training
Both our senior instructors and a large number of cadets are taking a well earned holiday and are not going to be around on the 14th of July so there will be no training that day. As far as I am aware there will be a race on the Sunday however for those that are around.

Cadet Hoodies and Rugbies
We are still taking orders for club hoodies and rugby shirts. The hoodies cost between £12.00 and £20.00 depending on size and the Rugby Shirts are £15.00 to £20.00. Let Neil know if you would like one.

Crew Exchange
There is a slot on the web site for anyone looking for a crew or indeed wanting to be a crew. If you have questions about this please let either Elaine or Neil know via e-mail

Behaviour.
Let me remind you all that as representatives of your respective sailing clubs we expect you behave. We do not want the residents of Kippford suggesting the club is to blame for any disruption. Please respect both the club and each other at all times. Here endeth the lesson!

Finally helpers
There are always lots of helpers needed to run the week smoothly. Please encourage you parents to give us a hand. No sailing experience is required for the bar or the washing up!

Have a good holiday!

Cadet stuff…No. 3 ……2007
Another good training day on Saturday. I hope some of the beginners got more confident and the race start practice seemed to go well. At least you are all getting near the start line in time!

Sorting Boats
Elaine is going to be at the club next Saturday (9th June) in the afternoon sorting our boats. She would like some help from the Cadets so if you can be there it would be much appreciated.

Training on the 16th June
The next training session is on Saturday the 16th June. The plan will be to have a couple of groups again. The beginners will be getting some help from some of the more experienced cadets. The improvers group will be practicing downwind sailing and gibing. Mind your heads!

I'd like to catch you for ideas about activities for Cadet week that day so have a think about the things you might want to do. We'll put some burgers and sausages on the barbeque again. We may even have a new gas one by then! Remember to bring a £1.

Cadet Hoodies and Rugbies
We are now taking orders for club hoodies and rugby shirts. The hoodies cost between £12.00 and £20.00 depending on size and the Rugby Shirts are £15.00 to £20.00. Let Neil know if you would like one.

Weekend of the 30th June: The Rose Bowl
Because it is the South Scotland Sailing Association meeting at Wigtown Bay sailing club at the Isle of Whithorn on this weekend there will not be any training on the Saturday. We would like to encourage as many of you as possible to go and join in. Elaine will be camping and is happy to supervise any children whose parents prefer a proper bed. Help with transport of boats and bodies would be welcome. If you are going let Neil (e-mail below) or Elaine(elaine.ross@talk21.com) now so we can coordinate numbers.

July the 14th Training
Both our senior instructors and a large number of cadets are taking a well earned holiday and are not going to be around on the 14th of July so there will be no training that day. As far as I am aware there will be a race on the Sunday however for those that are around.

Borrowing Boats
The club boats are available for use by club members for the club racing sessions. If you want to borrow one for the day we suggest a donation to the Club(Topper / Mirror £5.00 : GP / Feva / Buzz £10.00) Please tell Elaine and she will let you know about availability. The donation can be put in the honesty box in the Club house next to the sign up sheets for racing.

Cadet stuff…No. 2 ……2007 - by Neil Kelly and Elaine Ross
Well done to all who came for our first day training. Great to see so many of you and also to share our fun with friends from Lochmaben. Maybe we'll have to do it again!

Training on the 19th May
Elaine (who has now passed her Senior Instructors - three cheers !!) is planning to work on boat control on the 18th May. Everyone who wants to come should let her know so we can plan numbers. She would like an e-mail best!! elaine.ross@talk21.com . This session will be for all levels from complete beginners to those doing races. Bring your log book for signing!

I am sorry but I won't be able to be there to help that day so if you can bring a parent to lend a hand that would be great. Even if its just helping to put boats in and out of the water we would appreciate it.

You might want to bring some lunch because there will not be any catering this time!

Got a Boat - time to start using it !!
To help with the cost of running the engines and start saving up for bits that are missing / needing replaced from some of the boats we will be starting to make a small charge for training sessions.

If you come and train in a club boat then you will need £2.00 but if you come and train in your own boat then its only £1.00

Thanks from Jess
Jess Muir said to say to you all 'Thanks for not messing up the club house on the day of the Fitting Out Supper'Future Training Sessions.
We'll put a list up in the Club House for you to put names on for future sessions. Again this helps us to plan for numbers so look out for these.

Photos and the web site.
As the Cadets have their own web page on the Club web site we hope to keep it stocked with pictures of you all from training and racing. If you have any objection to your picture being on the web site please let me know and we will avoid using any of you.

Borrowing Boats
The club boats are available for use by club members for the club racing sessions. If you want to borrow one for the day we suggest a donation to the Club(Topper / Mirror £5.00 GP / Feva / Buzz £10.00) Please tell Elaine and she will let you know about availability.
