Racing 29th April 07 by our Floating Reporter Duncan Gillespie

The Solway Yacht Club's sailing season is underway. Saturday 28th April saw around 30 cadets turn up for their first training session. Kippford village protected the cadets on the water from a strong easterly wind. They finished the day off in fine style with a barbeque.

On Saturday evening the club hosted the annual fitting out support which was supported by many of the clubs cruiser sailors. Around 50 members enjoyed a great social evening.

Sunday was the first dinghy racing day and 11 boats came along. However, although the sun was out the strong easterly was causing white tops on the waves. This meant that any racing was inshore and 2 of the deeper draft boats pulled out. Cadets and adults race together however; it was the adults who took an early bath. Neil Kelly the Cadet Officer decided to show the cadets how to capsize with poise and then how to right and capsize again in one smooth motion. But he wasn't the first Fiona McCulloch, her first outing in her new Laser recorded the first capsize of the year.

Results gave Stewart Biggar first place, Neil Kelly came second and the first cadet's Bronagh Gillespie and Ailsa Ross.Opening of Season Report and Pics by Duncan Gillespie - Slide show with save and copy facility.
